From White Sands National Monument you have to drive about 15 miles east to reach the next city, which is Alamogordo.

Alamogordo has a population of 35,582 (year 2000), an elevation of 4,350 feet and a zoo.

Around one third of Alamogordo's total population is working for the Holloman Air Force Base, Otero County's largest employer.

Alamogordo is the capital of Otero county. The city was founded in the year 1898 by John A. Eddy and Charles B. Eddy back in the days when the Southern Pacific Railroad was a big deal.

The name Alamogordo comes from Spanish alamo, which means cottonwood and gordo, which means fat.

Trinity Site, where the first atomic bomb was exploded on July 16, 1945, is located about 60 miles or 97 kilometers northwest of the city.

Alamogordo also features the International Space Hall of Fame, the New Mexico School for the Visually Handicapped, and a branch of the New Mexico State University.

Nearby are a space shuttle landing site, the Mescalero Apache Reservation, and the Lincoln National Forest.
